We are going to practice our English vocabulary playing Odd One Out with the items around the yard! In each of the 5 rounds, you’ll see 3 pictures. Your goal is to figure out which item doesn’t belong. You’ll also learn how to justify your answer with BECAUSE. Watch, play & learn!
The items used in this game are: flowers, grass, fence, plants, trees, house, yard, clouds, mountains.

🌿 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐚𝐫𝐝 🌺 : This is the second video of the Yard Series. In this series, you’ll get familiar with the vocabulary and expressions related to the area around your house. You’ll practice by playing Odd One Out and What’s missing. And I’ll even give you a tour of my own yard!

⏩ Next video of the series – A tour of my own garden.
⏮ Previous video – Introducing the Yard Series.

📋 This video builds on the vocabulary and structures introduced in the first video of the Yard Series. Children will practice without even realizing it! They’ll focus all their attention on identifying which item doesn’t belong and won’t notice that they keep repeating the words and sentences they previously learned. That’s the beauty of Odd One Out! They’ll also practice explaining why a given item doesn’t belong by repeating sentences starting with BECAUSE and learning how to form their own.

🧠 Odd One Out offers multiple ways of teaching and practicing. It’s the perfect game since our goal is for all children to find something new to learn and practice in each video regardless of how far along they are on their English journey.

From most basic to most complex, here is what your child will practice with this game:

🔸 Vocabulary about the yard: 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠, 𝑓𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠, 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠, ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑒, 𝑦𝑎𝑟𝑑, 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑑𝑠, 𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠
🔸 Passive knowledge of the vocabulary (recognizing the meaning of a word)
🔸 Pronunciation
🔸 Combining information with AND: 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠, 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠, 𝑎 𝑓𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑒
🔸 Meaning of WHY
🔸 Meaning of BECAUSE
🔸 Active knowledge of the words (naming the items you are shown)
🔸 Short descriptive statements: 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑙, 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑘𝑦
🔸 Negative statements: 𝑖𝑡’𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙, 𝑖𝑡 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑛 [𝑓] 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑘𝑦
🔸 Getting familiar with the correct structure of a WHY-question: 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑑𝑑 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡?
🔸 Giving a simple explanation with BECAUSE + a short descriptive statement: …𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙, …𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑
🔸 Contrasting and comparing with WHEREAS: 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑏𝑖𝑔 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙, 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑑𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑢𝑝 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
🔸 Giving a more complex explanation with BECAUSE: …𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑛, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛-𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑡, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚.
🔸 Different ways of asking the same question: 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑑𝑑 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡? = 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔?
🔸 Understanding natural English: I use many more words, expressions, sentences and questions even though they are not part of the learning goals of this video.
